5 Responses to “What Kind OF Graphics card Do i Need ?”

              • kain81073 says:

Ok, what you gave was way too much information, and not the right kind. All you really need to find the answer to your question is the computer model. Is it a Compaq Presario 061? I am not personally familiar with that model, but if you look at the documentation it will tell you under “expansion slots”. One, or probably multiples, of them will say something like “PCI Express x16″.

This is the critical information. AGP (Acceleratred Graphics Port) used to be the standard, but over last 3 or 4 years has been overtaken by the highly overrated PCI Express slots. You need to take a look at your documentation and find the layout of the motherboard. It will have an actual picture of the inside of the computer with the different slots labeled. The PCI Express slots are the ones that you will use for your upgraded video card.

A card that says “x8″ means it will plug into a PCI Express slot of x8 OR LARGER. PCI is backwards compatible, meaning that if you plug a x8 card into a x16 slot, it will work. However, if you plug a x16 card into a x8 slot, it will not work.

                Hope this helps.

Wow - look at that detail. I’m sure that the graphics bus is in there somewhere. I have a question - just how much of that info really relates to graphics cards?

Anyway, I found this helpful discussion.

That GFX card should be fine. It doesn’t matter if it’s 4,8 or 16x. That’s the max speed of the motherboard, not the graphics card.

              • Desslok says:

Hi, that card should work just fine since it’s a PCI v2.x based card and your board does support it since it is backward compatible with v1.x PCI slots.

Here are the specs for your system board

                Hiya

desslok sounds like he knows what he’s talking about but I couldnt see anything relating to your motherboard model, and so am not as confident as him that your motherboard doesnt support pcie. If it /does/ and you use a pci card, you will have hamstrung your machine.

                If you run this

                and go to mainboard-graphics

                What does the output say?
